APS (Antiphospholipid Syndrome)

Our story is about a patient named April. April was diagnosed with APS (Antiphospholipid Syndrome) following her 39th birthday, after experiencing two miscarriages.   APS is a relatively common finding for couples who struggle with pregnancy loss. It is thought that 10-20% of women with multiple pregnancy losses suffer from APS. APS is a thrombotic immunological condition where the body produces antibodies that react with its own tissues, including those associated with conception. If left untreated, it can result in pregnancy loss and can also result in other complications, such as Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) for the mother.    Stago products can be vital in the patient’s journey and treatment. Our systems help to perform the complex array of lab tests needed and provide a more effective and standardised way to diagnose APS. For example, our comprehensive APS reagent line, combined with our coagulation systems and their automated coagulation algorithms, can automate testing and support result interpretation to ensure laboratories provide a correct and timely APS diagnosis.   With proper management, more than 70% of pregnant women with Antiphospholipid Syndrome will have a successful pregnancy. However, to guide treatment, it is essential to have a proper diagnosis.   April’s struggle with pregnancy, diagnosis, and miscarriage doesn’t have to happen. Likewise, an APS diagnosis does not have to be defined by trauma and loss. Following diagnosis and treatment, April and her partner were delighted to be able welcome a daughter into their family!   We are proud that our products can help families like April’s have safe and successful pregnancies.
