Importance of diagnostic testing in the management of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).

Australia’s CDC has just published the Aura Report, the sixth Australian report on antimicrobial use and resistance in human health.
Here is a link to the full report.
AURA REPORT – Sixth Australian report on antimicrobial use and resistance in human health
In this report diagnostic tests, including AST (susceptibility tests), culture and sensitivity testing and PCR testing are all mentioned explicitly as important tools for reducing AMR. There are also numerous implicit references to diagnostic and microbiological testing, without specifying the tests themselves.
At the recent CSIRO AMR 2026 Summit, diagnostic testing was prominent in the key strategies to urgently reduce unnecessary antimicrobial agent use and hence AMR.
PTA has and will continue to push for diagnostic testing to be a central pillar in the fight against AMR.
